Man killed in Kunak ‘Kongsi’ house fire

KUNAK: A 63-year-old man was killed in a fire that destroyed two blocks of “kongsi” house at Lorong 7, Jalan Kg Kunak Jaya, here, Sunday.

The “kongsi” is an old building that once housed workers of a wood factory.

A resident in one of the blocks, Murni Firman, 19, said she managed to save her two children, aged one year and five months.
She said they were resting in the house while her husband, a fisherman, was at sea at that time.

“We were unable to salvage any documents or belongings because the fire spread very quickly due to strong winds,” she said.

 Kunak Fire and Rescue Chief Mohammad Omarbatha, who led the operation, said firefighters were deployed to the scene following a distress call at 12.15pm.

Four families lived in the rented house, he said, adding police, Rela and Civil Defence Force personnel helped in the operation. The fire was brought under control at 1.07pm. The cause of the fire and estimated loss are still under investigation.
