Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Works Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has ordered the Sandakan Municipal Council to fix a suspension bridge in a state of disrepair, which went viral as schoolchildren were pictured using them on the first day of schools reopening Monday.

Bung, in a statement today, said he had ordered an expedited repair to the bridge at Kg Nelayan Tengah as soon as he was alerted to the matter although the matter was beyond his ministry's purview.

"The government is taking things like this seriously, moreover, it involves schoolchildren's safety," said the Deputy Chief Minister.

The viral Bernama photos show schoolchildren dangerously braving the some-150-metre bridge across a river.

Some of the bridge's wooden floorboards are missing while holes can be seen in part of its wire meshes as apparent in the pictures.
