Kota Kinabalu: Former tourism minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun hoped the state would be able to reopen its international borders to revive tourism badly hit by the pandemic but this would need people to first learn to live with Covid-19 safely.
He said the industry was one of the biggest job providers in the state but was inevitably affected by Covid-19.
"As a former tourism minister, many friends from overseas are asking when they can come to Sabah," Masidi, now Local Government and Housing Minister and Finance Minister II, was reported by
NST as saying during an event here today.
"It shows Sabah has tremendous potential as a tourism destination. If the borders reopen, the industry will rise. We really hope it will open up soon."
On whether the world's fast-spreading Covid-19 variant Omicron would derail tourism revival, Masidi said people first have to learn to live with the virus.
"I believe with the advance of medical science, I'm sure they will come up with an 'antidote' that will curb or turn Covid-19 into a flu-like virus," he said further in the report.
"For now, we have to conform with the health regulations and standard operating procedures."
