Stolen properties: Main jailed
Kota Kinabalu: A 36-year-old man was jailed a total of 24 months jail by the Magistrate’s Court here on two counts of having stolen properties.

Arthur Julian Abit pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to both charges under Section 411 of the Penal Code.

Arthur was handed 12 months jail for keeping a stolen Proton Saga FLX car belonging to  Glynis Jeplin at 8.30pm on May 19, 2021 at an open space in Kg Bambangan, Inanam.

On the second count, Arthur was handed another 12 months for having a stolen driving licence and a stolen ATM card belonging to  Regan Benedict also at the same place and time.

The charge carries a jail term of between six months and five years and liability of a fine, on conviction.

Unrepresented, Arthur requested for a lenient sentence and asked for the jail term to run concurrently by promising that he would not repeat similar offence in future.

Jessica ordered Arthur to serve the sentence concurrently from the date of his arrest.

In another case, an 18-year-old woman was fined RM800 or seven days jail for engaging in online gambling using a handphone in public.

Mardiyani Abd Malik admitted to committing the offence at the staircases of a lodging house in Asia City, at 6.44pm on Oct 20, last year.

Inspector Albert Basiri, prosecuting, told the court that RM350 in cash was also seized by police from Mardiyani.

Mardiyani, who was not represented, requested a lower fine by saying that she has no job.

She was charged under Section 7(2) of the same Act, which each provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both, on conviction.
