Kota Kinabalu: Sabah recorded its fourth education cluster in the span of one week, this time involving hostel students at SMK Kundasang, said Sabah’s Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.Named as the Jalan Bypass Kologon Cluster, it is also the second education cluster recorded in Ranau, just five days after the first one was recorded, namely the Puri Ranau Cluster on Jan 18.
Masidi said the index case, a 16-year-old female student who experienced symptoms on Jan 17, was tested positive with a self-test kit, which was later confirmed with a PCR screening.
“Screenings on some 70 close contacts conducted by the State Health Department (JKNS) found six of her roommates positive, bringing the total tally of cases in this cluster to seven.
“All cases are in category one and two and have been segregated as well as given suitable treatment,” he said in a statement, Saturday.
Sabah’s cases rose to 218 on Saturday from 176 on Friday, while one death was recorded in Papar.
On the caseload, Masidi said Tuaran topped the list with 37 cases, followed by Kota Kinabalu (34), Sandakan (21), Penampang (19), Putatan (17), Kota Marudu (13) and Tawau (13).
“A total of 12 districts recorded single-digit cases while six districts did not record any new cases,” he said.
He added that 111 cases were close contacts, while 77 were sporadic infections.
Masidi said 215 out of 218 cases were category one and two infections that do not require hospital treatment, while three cases are in category three. There are no category four and five infections.
Some 171 Covid-19 patients have been discharged from the hospital while 687 patients are currently receiving treatment at hospitals, low risk quarantine and treatment centres (PKRCs), prisons/temporary detention centres and private facilities.
Masidi said 19 patients are under critical care with 16 in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)/repurposed critical care and three in the open ward while five patients needed ventilator support.
On Sabah’s immunisation programme, Masidi said 8,989 individuals were vaccinated on Jan 21, of which 8,890 were adults and 99 were teenagers.
“Some 2,453,487 individuals have completed their first dose, of which 76.72 per cent were adults. Some 2,409,276 individuals have completed both doses of the vaccine, of which 76.01 per cent were adults.
He added that 337,145 teenagers have received their first dose, whereas 312,561 teenagers have been fully vaccinated thus far, which is 72.02 per cent of the teenage population.
