Kota Kinabalu: The agriculture sector (palm oil) is one of the largest contributors to occupational accidents in the State, according to Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sabah director, Zulkifli Yahaya.

“In Sabah, the palm oil sector is one of the leading causes of worker mortality. As a result, it is critical for employers to understand that it is their obligation to ensure a safe and healthy workplace,” he said recently in a statement.

Employers must prioritise worker safety and health, according to him, and integrate Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) in their project action plans.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the Gamalux Oils Sdn Bhd, headed by the head plant facility manager, James Thiruchelvam recently made a courtesy visit DOSH Sabah office. The purpose of the visit was to share information and hear DOSH’s perspective on how to improve Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) in the Lahad Datu-based eco-friendly technology palm oil manufacturing company.

“We’ve been busy cleaning house internally, finding critical holes in present policy, and focused on achieving big OSH performance outcomes for the benefit of our staff,” said James.  “We are passionate about providing a safe and healthy work environment for our employees. It has always been a top priority for us, and we will continue to do so with the assistance of DOSH Sabah, who will share their experience and skills,” he said.

Also present were the DOSH Sabah Deputy Director Arahman Jamel, DOSH Sabah assistant director, Elisa Eligius Samuel, Gamalux Oils Sdn Bhd assistant plant manager, Daud Ahmad and several senior officials.
