KENINGAU: Thirteen residents from three villages in Bingkor were evacuated by members of the district Fire and Rescue Department due to flash floods on Tuesday night.
Keningau Fire and Rescue Department Zone Chief Yuszaimi Hairrul Azwan Juatan said the flash floods in Kampung Bunsit, Kampung Minansut and Kampung Tongkungon were due to heavy rain that caused the Bayoyo River to overflow onto the road.
He said the Fire and Rescue Station received a call at 9.19pm via MERS 999 and 10 personnel led by Operations Officer Leong Hoi Min were deployed to the location with machinery some 8km from the station.
“The flash floods in the three villages caused several houses to be inundated, prompting the personnel to evacuate the 13 victims,” he said.
He said the water levels in all the affected areas were reported to be receding.
Bingkor Assemblyman Datuk Robert Tawik @ Nordin was also at the scene.
The Assistant Minister of Works advised residents living near the river to always be careful and keep an eye on their children.
“I urge the residents to evacuate immediately if the river water level continues to rise that can endanger their safety,” he said.
