RANAU: Two Frenchmen survived separate paragliding mishaps on Mount Kinabalu, Monday, thanks to the swift action of the PBB Auxiliary Fire Officer Mountain Search and Rescue (MoSAR) team.
Ranau Fire and Rescue Department Chief Ridwan Mohd Taib said one of the incidents involved an adult who suffered leg injury, while the other involved a 54-year-old who had to be rescued from a tall tree.
“The first incident happened about 7.39am. We received an emergency call about a paraglider who injured his left leg after colliding with the mountain surface at Km7.5, Mount Kinabalu.

“The victim was given initial treatment by the MoSAR team and then taken down using a stretcher (Robinson Stretcher) to Timpohon Gate before being sent to the Ranau Hospital using an EMRS vehicle for further treatment,” he said.
Not long after the first incident, Ridwan said, the department received another emergency call at 10.52am informing of another victim who was paragliding on the mountain.
“The victim had strayed and was trapped on a tree in the Kiau View Trail area at a height of 60 feet.
“Fourteen personnel along with an EMRS vehicle and two utility vehicles were deployed to the scene.
“The victim was successfully lowered about 3.56pm using a 3:1 lifeline system and it was found that he did not suffer any injuries and did not need treatment. The operation ended at 4.48pm,” he said.
According to Ridwan, seven paragliders went up Mount Kinabalu to participate in paragliding activities on Monday and fortunately only one was injured in the mishaps.
