Kota Kinabalu: The court set March 8 for e-review of the case of a 42-year-old man charged with having a live pangolin, a protected animal, without permit.
Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah set the date for Victor Lembertius when his case was brought up for pre-trial case management via Zoom.
The court fixed the date to monitor the status of Practice Certificate of Victor’s counsel.
Victor is accused of having the Malayan pangolin (Manis Javanica) without valid authorisation under the Law Enforcement of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.
Pangolins are fully protected animals listed under Schedule 1, Part 1, of Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.
The offence allegedly took place 4.30pm on Nov 16, 2020 at the KM35.5 Jalan Kimanis Keningau, Papar.
Victor on Jan 6, this year, pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 41(2) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, punishable under Section 41(4) of the same enactment, the offence carries a fine of between RM50,000 and RM250,000 or jail term of between one and five years, or both, on conviction.
Counsel Datu Baginda Datu Laja acted as defence for Victor.
