KOTA KINABALU: The power supply at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) has been fully restored at 3.20am, Thursday (Feb 24), following a temporary disruption that started at 4.45pm, Wednesday.
Malaysia Airports Acting Senior General Manager Kamaruzzaman Razali said the power disruption occurred during power supply migration works conducted by the airport’s contractor and had affected certain areas of the terminal only.
“Passenger processing at the terminal was able to carry on as usual due to the availability of alternative electricity supply provided by several generator sets for essential operations,” he said in a statement, Thursday.
“Flight operations such as landing, and take-off was not affected and there were no flight delays.”
Expressing his regrets over the incident, Kamaruzzaman apologised for “the inconvenience caused to our airport guests and retail partners during the power supply interruption."
“The airport technical team was immediately deployed to resolve the problem and they worked non-stop with the contractor to restore the main power supply.
“During this time, we had also deployed extra manpower to the affected areas to ensure the continued safety of passengers,” he said.
He also said all 14 departure and 22 arrival flights operated smoothly with the last flight taking off from KKIA at 12.40am.
This is not the first time the KKIA has experienced power interruption. In 2018, the international airport was hit by a blackout for about an hour from 6pm. The runway lights were not affected.
In 2013, the KKIA was forced to close for the night after the runway lights failed, cancelling or rescheduling several arriving and outgoing flights and leaving many people stranded.
