Main pipe leakage causes water woes in Labuan
Kota Kinabalu: The leakage in the main pumping pipe from the main distribution water tank in Pulau Enoe had caused the unscheduled water disruptions on this duty-free-island over the last two months.

Labuan Water Department (JBA) Director Trinil Indah Puspita said efforts had been intensified to fix the leaked 800mm-diameter pipe which had resulted in water supply disruptions to thousands of consumers in several villages and residential areas.

Water woes at the international and business financial centre and oil and gas hub continued to exacerbate since early January with 35 notices of water supply disruptions issued by JBA, with some areas experiencing two week-long water cut.

Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli highlighted the water issue during the Dewan Rakyat session on March 2, requesting for an allocation for a short-term solution.

Labuan relies on 90 per cent water supply from the mainland, through a 25.7kilometre submarine pipeline channelled directly from the Padas River in Beaufort to its reservoirs in Pulau Enoe. Water supply disruptions are common in Labuan and have been a persistent issue for decades, and old pipes had been blamed for the interruptions.

JBA will update the latest status of water supply from time to time through the agency’s website.
