TAWAU: Some 500 squatter houses at a water village in Kg Kurnia Jaya, MIle 4, Jalan Apas, here, were believed destroyed in a fire that broke out around 4.40pm Thursday.

At press time, firefighters were reportedly still battling the blaze. Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Julius John Stephen Jr said a team of 23 officers and personnel, as well as two machines, a water tank and utilities, rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call from MERS999 at 4.45pm. According to him, an aid team from BBP Semporna was also dispatched to the scene to assist. No casualties were reported thus far.
