Kota Kinabalu: Former Chief Minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee has suggested that the State Government take a new approach to tackling the worsening child-beggar issue in Sabah.

“We have the laws and policies, as well as government agencies and departments but the problem has yet to be resolved and is now getting rampant,” he said during question-and-answer time at the State Legislative Assembly sitting, here, Tuesday.

“Previously, it was prevalent in the East Coast, but now it has spread to Kota Kinabalu – at Centre Point, and Api-Api Centre, among others. As such, I think a fresh approach should be taken.”

Yong, who is also a nominated assemblyman, asked whether the State Government would seek help from Unicef as the organisation is experienced in managing such issues.
