AirAsia ready for border reopening Apr 1, plans more flights to-from Sabah

Kuala Lumpur: AirAsia is ready for the reopening of Malaysia's borders come April 1 and have during the hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic invested in a superapp that allows users seamless travel on its routes.

It also has plans to increase flights to and from Sabah, including having A330s on standby in the event China and South Korea also reopen their borders.

"But the priority at the moment is attaining our pre-pandemic levels while at the same time monitoring the situation to increase flights as well as expand our destinations where possible," said its CEO Riad Asmat.

Riad was briefing journalists on what the airline had been doing in the two years since the series of lockdowns that affected the industry badly that saw up to 1,000 staff, half of them in Malaysia, being retrenched and many others placed on furlough without pay but entitled to basic privileges.

Riad said where Sabah is concerned, he was made to understand from discussions with the State Government last week that "everything will be aligned towards the April opening."
