Void buying or staying in a south-west entry property
MANY potential property owners select houses based on the house number and design, both of which are less important factors, according to Vasthu Sastra, the ancient science of construction.

Never choose a property based on its looks and modern designs but the direction the house is facing, which is crucial for the well-being of the occupants.

Of the eight compass directions – north, south, east, west, north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west - the only one in which the main door must not be located is the south-west.

But one should not be confused between a south-west facing house and south-west main door entry.

A south-west facing house can have its main door located in the south or west but not in the south-west. This is because the south-west is where the subtle energy that enters into the house from the north-east is stored.

Obviously, having any openings in this quadrant will allow the cosmic power to escape, and this could result in the homeowner experiencing financial losses, health problems and having no peace of mind. But what if, the plot of land on which the house stands faces the south-west, or if the house itself faces the south-west?

Neither of these situations is a problem because all you have to do is make sure the main door is not placed in the south-west quadrant. So where does one place the front door, then? A little math is involved in answering that question: say the house is 8m wide; divide that width by three to ascertain the south, south-west and west quadrants, then place the main door in either the south or west regions.

Placing kids in the correct quadrant of the house can influence them to develop bond with their parents and create a united family.

Once you have the main door correctly placed away from the south-west quadrant in a house that faces the south-west, check the location of the back door. While houses facing in other directions can have their front and back doors aligned in the centre, houses facing the south-west will likely have to have the doors off to one side or the other. This is by no means a defect, and all south-west facing houses should not be labelled bad because their spaces can still be arranged in a Vasthu-friendly way. However, such options can only be followed in landed properties but not in condominiums and apartments because they do not have the option of moving a south-west main door entry.

Next, the kitchen in a south-west facing double-storey house, for instance, should be in the north-west and the prayer room in the north-east. The staircase should, ideally, be in the south-east. On the first floor, the master bedroom should occupy the south-west or south or west and its attached bathroom should be in the east. The children’s or spare bedroom can be located in the north, north-east or east. If there is no space for the prayer room on the ground floor, it can be moved to first floor’s living or into the bedroom in the north-east. And what does one do if a house has two main doors – most houses in Malaysia come with a single door and a sliding glass door. So how to deal with such a situation. This is actually a fortunate situation to be in, as the house owner can then simply choose the most suitable door to use as the main door. The problems begin when a house has only one main door and that door located in the inauspicious direction. In such a case, Vasthu recommends closing off the inauspicious door location of south-west and creating a new doorway in a more auspicious location.
