Kota Kinabalu: Sumaki Junior Football Team won the four-corner football tournament organised by Sabah Junior Football Club (SJFC) at the CIMB football ground here in Likas on Saturday.
They were declared the winners after winning all three matches and in second place were Akademi Matunggong United FC followed by Matunggong Football Team and Tuaran Football Academy.
SJFC President Jumat Jimy said the tournament was held to select players to form a team representing Malaysia in the La Liga Spanish in Penang from June 3-7.
According to him, Kedah Club and Penang FC are the other two teams to represent the country while the foreign entries are teams from Japan, Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, Philippines, Australia and Thailand.
“The tournament held on Saturday was to select 12 players for the nine-a-side competition in June and training should begin after the Hari Raya celebration,” he said on Monday.
He added that he will be the team manager with Johan Darno as his assistant while the head coach is Tomy Mardison assisted by Adli Radin and Michel Wong as fitness coach.
