Technical issues force Tawau flight to turn back
PUTRAJAYA: Flight MH2664 made an air turn back to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) while en route to Tawau on Sunday (April 3) due to technical issues which were compounded by bad weather, Malaysia Airlines said.

“As a precautionary measure, the pilot made the decision to return to Kuala Lumpur in the interest of passenger safety,” it said in a statement Tuesday, adding that the aircraft landed safely at KLIA at 5.03pm. (The) safety of our crew and passengers remains of utmost importance to Malaysia Airlines,” said the national carrier.

Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Chester Voo, in a separate statement Tuesday, said it had received a Mandatory Occurrence Report submitted by Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) on the incident. He said the aircraft made an air turn back to KLIA as per the required safety procedures.

“The pilot in command and co-pilot managed the technical issue safely and returned to Kuala Lumpur for the required maintenance action,” he said. As a follow-up to the incident, Voo said CAAM would be reviewing MAB’s internal Flight Data Monitoring System that monitors and records all flight data profiles of the operating aircraft.

“Preliminary data have shown correct responses by the operating crew following the issue onboard,” he said. Voo said CAAM would continue to monitor the situation and would not compromise on any issue that could potentially jeopardise the safety and security of airlines’ operations and the public.
