PENAMPANG: Police are actively looking for the suspect behind the attempt to harass a female high school student here recently.
Penampang Police Chief Deputy Supt Mohd Haris Ibrahim said the alleged incident has gone viral in social media.
He confirmed that a police report had been lodged and that investigation has begun under Section 8(1)(E) of the Sabah Minor Offences Ordinance.
“The police are actively conducting operations to apprehend the suspect and all elements on the ground are being mobilised to maximise security.
“We would like to advise the public not to spread rumours and false information that could cause panic among the public and instead allow the police to conduct investigations,” he said.
Mohd Haris urged the public with information about the case to call the Penampang District Police Headquarters (IPD) Operations Room at 088-723961.
On April 11, the Chairman of the Kg Inobong Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) issued a warning letter to villagers, which was widely shared in social media.
In the letter, the Chairman said he had received a complaint from a villager in the Inobong area about an incident in which a blue car with tinted mirrors approached a female student who was waiting for a bus to go to school at 10am.
He said two huge and tall men, who appeared to be dark skinned, approached the girl in the car and invited her to enter their vehicle.
“Terrified, the girl ran home and told her mother about the incident.”
The Chairman also said the warning letter was to remind the public to be always vigilant and careful about the safety of their children.
