KENINGAU: The concrete bridge across Pamalan River at Km 1.1 of Bingkor Bypass, near Kampung Sasaie, here, was officially opened on Tuesday for use by all vehicles.
State Works Assistant Minister Datuk Robert Tawik @ Nordin said construction work on the bridge, scheduled for completion in 18 months, was completed in eight months.
“Today we are opening this bridge to all road users. It (bridge) is better than the previous Bailey bridge which was not safe for use,” he said.
Robert said the bridge was closed for about eight months to make way for the construction of the new concrete bridge that uses a two-way route.
“Work on this new bridge began in July last year to replace the old and dangerous Bailey bridge,” he said.
Robert, who is also Bingkor Assemblyman, thanked all parties, including road users and the community, for their cooperation and patience while waiting for the bridge to be completed.
Also present were Public Works Department (PWD) Division Engineer Zulkefli Salip Arjud and Assistant District Officer (Development) Easter Michael Sutili @ Norhafizah, as well as representatives from the Keningau Parliamentary Office and Bingkor Community Development Leaders Unit.
