Kuala Lumpur: Celcom Axiata Bhd (Celcom) is aiming to expand the coverage and capacity of its 4G LTE service to cover 92 per cent of Sarawak and 85 per cent of Sabah by the end of the year.

Celcom Chief Operating Officer (Technology) Afizulazha Abdullah said with the upgrade, customers in Sabah and Sarawak will receive better 4G LTE service.

“We are very committed to the development of network coverage in Sabah and Sarawak, these two states are very important to us. We hope users there can enjoy better 4G coverage,” he said during a Bernama TV programme on Celcom.

Afizulazha said Celcom also places great importance on upgrading its network in Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the aspiration of the national digital infrastructure plan known as Jendela.

In April, Celcom announced the allocation of over RM200 million for network upgrading works in Sabah and Sarawak for 2022, which involves enhancing the coverage and capacity of its 4G LTE, Celcom’s core network as well as investment in fibre coverage for Celcom Timur Sdn Bhd (CTSB).

Afizulazha said the telecommunications company has used comprehensive technology such as “multiple-output” (Mimo) that can reduce traffic congestion and enable more Celcom users to use its service without interruption.

Apart from that, he noted that usage of telecommunication services rose to 60 per cent during the pandemic with data consumption increasing to 30 gigabytes (GB) a month compared to 20GB a month before the pandemic.

Celcom expects data usage to continue to rise although the country is currently in the transition to the endemic stage, he said.
