After Raya holidays, new Covid-19 cases jump by 119.2%

PETALING JAYA: The number of new Covid-19 cases spiked last week by 119.2% to 19,137 from 8,732 recorded a week before, said health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
In his weekly update ending May 14, Noor Hisham said the increases in cases, which came following the Hari Raya festivities, also saw a rise in the number of people admitted to public hospitals and Covid-19 quarantine centres.
ADVERTISEMENT The number of those admitted to these public health facilities increased by 38% per population of 100,000 compared to the preceding week.
Overall bed occupancy for non-critical cases increased by 18%, while utilisation of intensive care unit (ICU) beds dropped by 10%.
A total of 4,475,873 Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the country, with 29,762 being active cases.
“Recoveries dropped by 59.2% from 30,930 to 12,618 cases. The cumulative total of recovered patients is 4,410,499.
ADVERTISEMENT “The number of deaths rose by 3.1% (32 cases to 33 cases) bringing the cumulative figure for fatalities to 35,612,” he said.
