KENINGAU: The Sabah United Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SUCCC) called on all affiliate members to remain united and maintain a firm determination to achieve the completion of Wisma Tionghua building plan.
Its President, Tan Sri Andrew Liew, said despite challenges faced the past two years due to the pandemic, SUCCC and the United Sabah Chinese Communities Association of Kota Kinabalu (USCAKK) were able to overcome all obstacles and are proud that Wisma Tionghua construction is now going on smoothly.
He urged chambers’ leaders to listen to opinions and suggestions from all parties, especially critical opinions to avoid mistakes when making a decision.
Liew said this in his opening speech when he officiated at the 42nd installation ceremony of the Keningau Chinese Chamber of Commerce, here, recently.
He expressed hopes for the new Keningau Chinese Chambers of Commerce committee to continue delivering consistent services and cooperate with SUCCC in ensuring the wellbeing of the Chinese business community in Sabah.
“The Chinese Chamber of Commerce not only leads Chinese businessmen and Chinese communities, but also actively cooperates with the government authorities in social development and community building agenda,” he said.
Liew thanked the Keningau Chinese Chamber of Commerce for its long-term commitment in promoting various conference affairs and political, economic and educational obligations, hard work, sincere and selfless dedication of directors and members, and their wholehearted services to the business community.
He said with the nation transitioning into the endemic phase, the SUCCC and its affiliated associations must do their best to help the state and local economy to usher in a new recovery by cooperating with the government via its policies and other programmes.
“We play a leading role in the chamber of commerce; take a pragmatic attitude and responsibility as the economy is fully opened, strive to stabilise the confidence of merchants in operations, prepare for the measures of currency rise and strive for more positive energy.
“By enhancing competitiveness, we will stimulate the recovery of funds, making the country more peaceful and safe,” he said.
The ceremony ended with Liew handing over a mock cheque of RM20,000 to the Keningau Chinese Chamber of Commerce for the development of a columbarium. It was received by its President, Chew Ah Kau.
Earlier in his speech, Chew said the new committee hoped to complete three welfare programmes for the Chinese community and businessmen during their term of office, with the first one to complete the construction of a columbarium, which is currently in progress.
Chew also thanked Liew for his contribution and RM20,000 donation for the committee to achieve its target.
