TAWAU: The Joint Task Force 2 thwarted an attempt to smuggle in 8,650 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM1,038,000 in Tawau waters around 3.05am on Monday.

Its Commander Brigadier General Abdul Karim Ahmad said the success was the result of an Op Benteng Bersama patrol after four speedboats were detected by the Radar Coastal Surveillance Coastal Station.

 “The boats were detected moving from the direction of Pulau Sebatik towards Batu 3 Jalan Apas in a suspicious manner,” he said.
