Tuaran: The body of a Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic student from Lahad Datu who went missing while swimming at Sabandar Beach on Tuesday has been found.
Md Habbibullah Juhadi, 21, was discovered by members of the public at the beach area around 12.16am on Wednesday, about 700 metres from the last location where he was reported missing.
Tuaran Fire and Rescue Station Chief Abdul Qawie Abdul Gapar said, his department received an emergency call at 6.55pm on Tuesday.
He said 10 firefighters raced to the area and the Civil Defence Force, police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and villagers helped with the search and rescue.
“Rescue teams obtain information about the victim’s discovery with the help of villagers who are assisting in the search.
“The victim, however, was pronounced dead by officials from the Ministry of Health before being handed over to the police for further investigation,” he said.
The operation ended at 1.17am.
When the incident occurred around 6.30pm on Tuesday, the victim was believed to have gone to the beach with four friends for a swim outing.
After noticing him being swept away by currents, his friends rushed to seek assistance from the villagers.
