Kota Kinabalu: Seven people were fined a total of RM7,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here for engaging in illegal gambling activities.
Clethra Cyrinus, Aranor Nistul, Nur Effa Abdullah and Hatina Subana pleaded guilty separately to having illegal gambling paraphernalia.
Clethra was fined RM1,200 or two months jail for having three lottery tickets without a licence, handphone, mobile printer and RM45 cash at 5.28pm on Nov 6, 2021 at Kepayan Ridge.
Aranor was fined RM1,200 or two months jail for having three lottery slips illegally at 5pm on Feb 26, 2022 in Putatan town.
Effa was fined RM800 or two weeks jail for having two 4D slips illegally, including RM90 cash at 4.05pm on March 5, this year in Kolombong.
Hatina was also fined RM800 or two weeks for having two lottery tickets illegally at 2.50pm on March 9 this year in Donggongon town.
They each had committed an offence under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act, which carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.
Meanwhile, Hairul Idris, Alvin Fred and Nurmala Rany admitted separately to engaging in online gambling using their respective handphone in public.
Hairul was fined RM1,200 or two months jail for committing the offence at 1.25pm on Jan 28, this year in Manggatal, while Alvin was fined RM1,000 or two months jail for committing similar offence at 2.30pm on May 27, 2021 at Plaza Kivatu, Penampang.
Nurmala Rany was fined RM800 or two weeks jail for committing the offence at 4.30pm on March 15, this year in Inanam.
The three were charged under Section 7(2) of the same Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both, on conviction.
The seven aged between 21 and 34 appeared before Magistrates Jessica Ombou Kakayun, Lovely Natasha Charles and Stephanie Sherron Abbie.
Earlier, the prosecution in tendering the facts of the cases, told the courts that seven were arrested by police during a raid following information about gambling activities in their respective area.
Inspectors Albert Basiri, Kelvan Elson Maik and Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit prosecuted.
