Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's number of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases dropped with the situation in the state under control, said a top official.

Sabah Health Director Datuk Dr Rose Nani Mudin said the state saw 528 new HFMD cases in the 22nd epidemiological week between May 29 and June 4.

The previous epidemiological week registered 725 cases, showing a decline by 27.17 percent. Sabah's cumulative cases now stood at 4,604.

"From this number, 4,224 cases (91 percent) were children aged six and below," said Rose in a press release today.

"Five districts with the most cumulative cases were Tawau (715 cases), Sandakan (615), Papar, (470), Lahad Datu (428) and Kota Belud (399).

"No HFMD deaths were reported in Sabah. Most infections occurred at private homes and early childhood education centres."
