Healthcare reform commission in the works to inject check and balance, says Khairy
Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the country’s healthcare system required structural changes, adding that the white paper was essential for ‘future-proofing’ the system.
PETALING JAYA: The health ministry will propose the establishment of a healthcare reform commission in a bid to inject institutional check-and-balance and stability in the sector.

Its minister, Khairy Jamaluddin, said this will be included in the white paper on healthcare reforms, which is expected to be tabled in Parliament in November.

He said the commission would be tasked with monitoring, advising and reporting on the status of healthcare reforms to the government, Parliament and the public.

“Having a transparent and well-appointed healthcare reform commission would inject a level of institutional check-and-balance and stability into the healthcare political economy, supporting structural reforms no matter what the future holds,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

Khairy said the ministry was currently considering four broad areas of reform in drafting the white paper on healthcare reforms.

The reforms included providing equitable access to basic medical services, sustainable financing of the healthcare sector, ensuring better governance and accountability as well as creating a more proactive healthcare system.
