KOTA KINABALU: Sabah, as the country's main cocoa bean producer, exported a total of RM16.16 million of cocoa and cocoa products last year, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
Of the total, the export value of chocolate was RM7.72 million or 10.6 per cent.
Last year, he said, Sabah accounted for 59 per cent of the country's total cocoa bean production, which was 540 metric tonnes and contributed 57 per cent or about 3,444 hectares of the country's cocoa plantation area of 6,000 hectares.
"Until today, Sabah is still a major contributor to the cocoa industry in the country either in terms of area or the production of quality raw cocoa beans.
“A total of five districts have become active cocoa cultivation areas in Sabah, namely Ranau, Kota Marudu, Tenom, Kota Belud and Tambunan,” he said when officiating the Sabah Cocoa Festival 2022, here, Sunday.
