Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah football team is aiming for the gold medal the 20th  Sukma Games in Kuala Lumpur in September.

Team manager Mohd Khairul Nizaem Moktar who received his official appointment letter from Sabah Football Association (Safa) executive secretary David Wisom on Tuesday morning said he will do his best to ensure they achieve the target.

“Sabah has a good record in Sukma, having won the title in Pahang in 2012 and reached the semi-finals twice in Kuching (2016) and Ipoh (2018).

“With good preparation and fighting spirit from the players, I am certain that the team can challenge for the title again,” he said.

He added that they intend to include Super League player Azhad Harraz to strengthen the team.

“The presence of Azhad hopefully will strengthen the team. Most of the players this year are from the current President Cup squad with the addition of at least two Youth Cup players.”

He is also confident that head coach Adzrien Harun and his assistant Sudirman Garamah are able to carry out their task once the centralised training begins in August.

“The players are expected to report for centralised training in August once the President’s Cup League group stage is over,” he said.

Meanwhile, other team officials who received their appointment letters on Tuesday were Asmawi Bair (goalkeeper coach), Awang Jasrie Awang Matusin and Dzulfaizal Ag Anak (fitness and physio coach) and Ronald Jackson (team administration officer).
