Kota Kinabalu: A 28-year-old Sarawakian charged with trafficking 2,129.1gm of syabu will know on Oct 7 whether he will have to enter his defence or be acquitted.
High Court Judicial Commissioner Amelati Parnell set the date for Anthony Chan Wei Onn when the prosecution closed its case after calling 14 witnesses.
The court fixed July 25 for both sides to file and serve their written submissions simultaneously and to file and serve their submission in reply, if any, by Aug 15.
Chan, an air-conditioner repairman, was accused of trafficking the syabu at 6.20pm on July 12, 2019 at the J&T Express premises on the ground floor, Kolam Plaza Phase 1, Jalan Lintas.
He had on Jan 20, 2020 claimed trial to the charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which carries the death sentence or imprisonment for life and whipping of not less than 15 strokes if not sentenced to death, on conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Khairulnizam Abu Bakar prosecuted while Chan was represented by counsel Ram Singh, Kimberly Ye and Chen Wen Jye.
Chan was ordered to be remanded further as the charge against him has no provision for bail.
Meanwhile, two men were sentenced to a month’s jail each by the Magistrate’s Court for shoplifting.
Md Nazri Abdullah Datin and Md Syafiq Hidrus, both 26, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to stealing a unit of Garnier Skin Natural Light Anti Spot White Cream at 4.27pm on June 15 at Watsons Putatan.
The offence under Section 380 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine or both, on conviction.
