Trio fined total of RM3,400 for gambling
Kota Kinabalu: Three people were fined a total of RM3,400 by the Magistrate’s Court for engaging in gambling sessions.

Sailim Manambong, 45, Syamri Suharto, 27, and Derwin, 32, pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to committing the offences.

Sailim was fined RM1,400 or two months jail for having two pieces of illegal Wah Hui riddles without licence at 4.40pm on Jan 8 this year in front of a shop, Manggatal.

Syamri was fined RM1,000 or two months jail for having two lottery tickets without a licence at 1.30pm on Feb 5 at Sinsuran while Derwin was also fined RM1,000 or two months jail for having three pieces of illegal lottery tickets at 4.10pm on Jan 19 in front of a restaurant in Kapayan.

The court heard from the prosecutions that the three were arrested by police  following information about gambling activities in their respective area.

Gambling paraphernalia, including RM255, RM23 and RM30 were seized from Sailim, Syamri and Derwin respectively, the court heard.

The three were charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

Unrepresented, the three requested for leniency saying they were unemployed while the prosecution applied for an adequate sentence.

The court ordered the sized money to be forfeited by the government.

In another case, a café owner was fined RM2,000 or three months jail for  operating the premises beyond the permitted time.

Foo Yin Zin, 54, pleaded guilty to operating the Golden City Café, which sell food and drinks, at Pintas Avenue in Penampang over the stipulated time at 1.30am on Feb  12 this year.

Foo had committed an offence under Section 4(1) of the Public Entertainment Ordinance 1958 which is punishable under Section 11 of same Ordinance that provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to one year or both, on conviction.
