Kota Kinabalu: Stigma associated with former inmates has faded, according to Kota Kinabalu Women’s Prison Deputy Director Rosliza Ishak.She said former inmates are no longer viewed as a marginalised minority in modern society.
“The acceptance of former inmates into the community is better and encouraging these days,” she said at the Hari Raya, Kaamatan, and Parents Day Celebration held simultaneously in conjunction with the prisons’ Jalinan Kasih Programme, here, Thursday.
Yayasan Kasih Chairperson Datuk Raya Erom officiated at the ceremony.
According to Rosliza, data in the prisons rehabilitation programme have begun to indicate a positive impact as a result of businesses and job sectors’ acceptance of former inmates.
Rosliza continued by expressing the Department’s hope that the community will keep helping those impacted.
“The visitors’ attendance today demonstrates that there is no longer discrimination towards former inmates.
“The Malaysian Prisons Department expressed optimism that the community’s support would continue in this manner,” she said.
Also present was the Board of Visiting Justices for Sabah Prisons Chairperson Datuk Katherine Lee Mei Oi.
