Kota Kinabalu: Police are investigating a viral clip that netizens worry shows a possible attempted kidnapping of a schoolgirl here, said Luyang assemblyman Phoong Jin Zhe, adding the matter might be only a misunderstanding.

The clip appears to show a man trying to gently pull the girl off something, but in the end letting go of the girl. 

Phoong said he has asked police to investigate and contacted the concerned school principal to understand the matter.

He said Luyang police had notified him that both families had lodged police reports and had their statements taken. 

Phoong further said police had told him the man in the clip had explained to them that he was only trying to warn the girl against playing on a wooden drain cover that looked dangerous.

"The police said that this might merely be just a misunderstanding," Phoong said.
