1945Now for the few incidents during the war. The local Chinese revolt on October 10th 1943 (i.e. the double tenth (on the Chinese Republic day) had done some havoc and brought miseries to people. Everywhere on the main roads we had check posts. It was market day and I had left the house early in the morning to get some vegetables.
When I was returning with two baskets full of vegetables, including the main staple food, Tapioca and wet sago flour in the raw form, I was nearing a check post, which I had not noticed while going.
A Japanese guard stopped me and confiscated the stuff I was carrying. He took it to the office nearby on a hill. I followed him and pleaded for them to be returned since they were required to feed my small children at home and that I was working in the Soknokoku (Survey Dept) . He asked me to get a letter from my Japanese boss. Luckily I knew his house and ran to it.
