Sabah proud to be witness at Measat-3d satellite launch
SABAH was honoured to witness the launch of the Measat-3d Satellite in French Guiana on June 22.

State Science Technology and Innovation (KSTI) Minister Datuk Yakub Khan said Sabah was among two states besides Sarawak selected to be among the 60-strong delegation to witness the launch.

“KSTI as the representative of Sabah feels very fortunate to be given the opportunity to see for themselves the technology which is understood to have a speed 10 times faster than the previous technology.

“The new satellite is expected to enable access to high-speed broadband even in limited areas or no land connection.

“It is hoped that after the availability of this satellite, the overflow of better broadband can be provided to all Sabahans in addition to what is offered in the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela),” he said, when met at the Sabah Skills & Technology Centre (SSTC) Convocation Ceremony in Kota Kinabalu on June 23.

Some 367 graduates for 2021 were awarded certificates and diplomas as part of the third SSTC convocation this year.

Also present were SSTC Chairman Datuk John Choo and SSTC Deputy Chairman Sumardi Mohd Yusof.

Meanwhile, youths are urged to continue their focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (Stem) for new business opportunities.

“Education, especially in Stem, is a catalyst for creativity and a generator of innovation that equips the younger generation with the skills needed to be competitive in the job market, thus being a catalyst to overall economic development,” he said.

“As such, SSTC takes proactive steps by organising skills programmes, as well as knowledge that focuses on science, technology and innovation.” He said Industrial Revolution 4.0 is a digital world that involves nine pillars and SSTC is one of the institutions that takes the opportunity to improve the value and quality of its programmes and students.

“These nine important pillars are the IoT or Industrial Internet of Things, robotic technology, additive manufacturing, horizontal and vertical integration, simulation and augmented reality (AR), cybersecurity, cloud computing, supply chain (network) and data analysis in the execution of daily tasks. This is to meet the needs of the market which is expected to start this year,” he said.

The best student award went to Amir Khusyairi Arif from the Culinary Arts programme, a law graduate from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UiTM) before pursuing his studies at SSTC in culinary as he has a deep interest in the field.

SSTC was established in 2001 and offers sponsored programmes from agencies under the Federal and Sabah Governments. The Centre also recorded a high percentage of graduate marketability of 90 to 95 per cent, as of 2021.
