SANDAKAN: A 42-year-old civil servant was charged in the Sessions Court here with two counts of soliciting bribes and accepting bribes to manage a woman’s identity card here six years ago.
Faridun Kasim who appeared before Judge Abu Bakar Manat pleaded not guilty to both charges.
On the first count, Faridun was accused of soliciting RM4,000 bribe as a remuneration to help manage the identity card of a 51-year-old woman at the National Registration Department.
Faridun was the Beluran General Operations Force (BN20) Intelligence Corporal at the time.
The charge, under Section 16 (a) (B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act and punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same Act, provides for imprisonment not exceeding 20 years and a fine not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe or RM10,000 or whichever is higher.
On the second count, Faridun was accused of corruptly accepting a RM1,400 bribe from a 77-year-old man on Dec 23, 2016, at a bank here as a remuneration to manage the issuance of the woman’s identity card.
The offence, under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009 and punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same Act, provides for imprisonment for a term not exceeding twenty years and a fine not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Abu Bakar set Aug 29 for mention of the case.
Faridun was granted bail of RM10,000 with RM4,000 deposited in one surety pending the date.
Faridun’s passport was also impounded by the court and that he was prohibited from approaching the prosecution witnesses and to report to the nearest MACC office according to the set schedule.
