TOUR operators in Semporna who have not registered their companies are advised to submit their applications soon as possible to avoid any complications.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said at least 41 companies here have yet to register.
He said besides irresponsible behaviour, operating illegally places tourists using their unlicensed services at risks
“If there are accidents or unfortunate incidents at sea, for example, their boat capsizes, the authorities will have difficulties in obtaining a record of the boat or tour operator, as well as the tourists they are bringing.
“The Ministry’s concern is to ensure tourists who come here are protected and receive transparent tourism services.
“In fact, I believe that the success or failure of a tourism destination lies in our capability of providing a secure and safe environment for the tourists,” he said in a statement, on June 27.
Jafry has been in Semporna since Sunday for a working visit, where the Ministry officials also engaged with Semporna tourism players to identify what challenges they are facing.
On delays at the Semporna tourism jetty when awaiting inspection and approval for vessels to bring visitors to islands, Jafry suggested a collaborative initiative to handle this.
He said the Semporna District Office, enforcement authorities and the tour companies should meet and figure out measures to ensure safe travel that follows the legal requirements and a travel schedule according to stipulated time.
“With cooperation from all involved parties, I think this can be solved,” he added.
