TOKYO: A senior Liberal Democratic Party official says former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo has died in a hospital where he was receiving treatment,
NHK World-Japan reported Friday.
He was shot on the street in Nara City, western Japan, at around 11:30am, on Friday. He was campaigning for the upcoming Upper House election. He was 67.
Earlier,
NHK public television aired footage showing Abe collapsed on the street, with several security guards running towards him. Abe was holding his chest when he collapsed, with his shirt smeared with blood.
NHK says Abe was rushed to a hospital.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the apparent attack in Nara. He was standing while making an election campaign speech ahead of Sunday’s election for the parliament’s upper house.
