Kuala Lumpur: Police detained a woman for allegedly making fun of her identity as a Malay-Muslim.
This was after she took off her baju kurung at a comedy club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail here on Friday.
Bukit Aman police Secretary Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin in a brief statement said the woman was detained to facilitate investigations after she was accused of insulting Islam.
“Police obtained a three-day remand order on the suspect from Sunday until July 12,” she said.
Noorsiah said the suspect will be detained at the Brickfields district police until the remand ends.
“Investigations are still ongoing,” she said. In the incident at the local comedy club in TTDI, a woman in ‘tudung’ went on stage to perform stand up comedy.
During her performance she allegedly made degrading religious remarks and took off her baju kurung. She was wearing a spaghetti strap dress underneath the traditional attire.
Through the 53-second video clip, the woman also admitted her status as a Malay and a Muslim apart from having memorised 15 chapters of the Quran.
Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) secretary Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said they received a report on the video and investigation was carried out by the Bukit Aman Classified Criminal Investigation Unit under Section 298A of the Penal Code (hurting the feelings of Muslims).
“The case is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988, which is the improper use of network facilities or network services.
“PDRM will take stern action against any party that acts to disrupt public order and national security as provided by law,” she said in a statement tonight.
Noorsiah urged the public not to play on any issue that could touch on racial and religious sensitivities in the community.
Deputy Minister of Federal Territories Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias said the DBKL action was a clear message that the government would not tolerate any activities deemed offensive to sensitivities on religion, race and the country’s sovereignty.
the club, ‘Crackhouse Comedy Club House’, in its Facebook post, strongly condemned the contents of the viral video and said it had lodged a police report on the matter at the TTDI police station.
“The individual in question and her partner were banned from the venue immediately after the performance,“ it said.
