Kota Kinabalu: Road users can now report immediately to City Hall’s hotline if they witness people dumping garbage from vehicles.

Mayor Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip said with the launching of the hotline “Sistem Aduan Pembuang Sampah Dari Kenderaan”, road users can report litterbugs by providing their details such as the car plate number, date and time of the incident, as well as the location.

“It would be better if the complainant can also take a picture or pictures of the incident as proof. All the information can be forwarded via the hotline WhatsApp at 012-2220220.

“Our department will further investigate the information provided by the complainants.

“Once we get clear evidence and investigation, the department will issue compounds to the owners of the vehicles concerned.

“The compounds would be issued under the Kota Kinabalu City Anti-Litterbug By-law,” said Noorliza.

The hotline was launched at the Kota Kinabalu Lestari Centre in the Community Hall, here, Saturday.

According to Noorlizah, any rubbish like cigarette butt and plastics bottle thrown from vehicles can be reported to the Hotline.

“Actually this system was done before and basically we just reactivated it because it can create awareness among the public to not simply throw rubbish from their vehicles.

“We hope with this system, the awareness of throwing rubbish from vehicles will increase and litterbugs will decrease,” she said.

To a question, Noorlizah said if the litterbug is a young child, the compound will be issued to the owner of the vehicle.

“There is a concept called ‘under the care and control’. So if children are caught throwing rubbish from vehicles, it is the responsibility of their guardians or parents,” she said.

Noorlizah also called on the public who have used cooking oil to bring it to the Lestari Centre which can be sold for RM3.50 per kg.

“This used cooking oil will not reused for cooking but as bio-fuel which a company working with us will buy,” said Noorlizah.

On the Lestari Centre, Noorlizah said the centre, which was launched on April 4, 2021, received an overwhelming response from the public.

She said the centre, which was temporarily closed during the pandemic, will be open from 8am until 5pm.
