Kota Kinabalu: A 23-year-old man who employed an illegal immigrant to work in his saloon as a hairdresser was fined RM10,000 or spend two months in prison.
Jafrie Alpa pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz to the charge against him, Wednesday.
He was found employing the 42-year-old Filipina at 1.37pm on Feb 23 this year at the Wow Bell Studio at Centre Point Sabah shopping complex, here.
The offence under Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/63 carries a jail term or a fine of between RM10,000 and RM50,000, or both, for each illegal immigrant involved.
During mitigation, Jafrie, who was not represented, asked for leniency and applied for the fine to be paid by instalments.
However, Prosecuting Officer Abdul Lamit from the Immigration Department, urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence so as to give a lesson to Jafrie.
The court granted Jafrie’s application to pay the fine by instalments in which he must pay RM5,000 on Wednesday and the balance on or before Aug 29 this year.
The court heard that on the said day, a team of immigration personnel conducted Ops Bersepadu found one of the saloon worker (Filipina) has no documents.
Investigation revealed that the Filipina who worked as a hairdresser, was hired by Jafrie.
Jafrie was the one who managed the business, including employing workers.
