Kuala Lumpur: The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) reiterated its full support for the Malaysian government’s stand of “one-China policy”.
Its President Tan Sri TC Goh hoped the international community would maintain this “international order” adopted via the resolution passed in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Oct 25, 1971, which recognised the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as “the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations and removed “the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek” from the UN.
He also hoped tension between China and the United States of America could be deescalated and normalised, as soon as possible, as it is crucial towards maintaining world peace and stability, which are essential for continue progress and prosperity for nations around the world.
He said bilateral relations between Malaysia and China, as well as with the US in various sectors could continue to grow steadily.
Goh, who is also a Board Member of the Malaysia-China Business Council (MCBC) cum Chairman of its Bilateral Policy Committee, expressed this in a statement while commenting on the controversial visit by US Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, recently, despite strong objections by the Chinese government.
He opined that the subsequent developments after this warrant serious attention of the international community, and they should be properly resolved.
Being a permanent member of UN Security Council, as compared to other nations, he said US should be more respectful of the UN resolutions, including the Resolution 2758 which was passed in UN General Assembly on Oct 25, 1971, which recognised the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as “the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations”.
“The ‘One-China policy’ has thus become the consensus and fundamental principle of the international community. Since her inception in 1949, a total of 181 countries in the world, US included, had established bilateral relations with China based on this policy.
“Malaysia too, based on the said policy, became the first country in Asean to establish diplomatic relations with China in 1974.
“Therefore, the Malaysian Chinese community and organisations share the same stand adopted by the Malaysian government in recognising and supporting the “one-China policy”,” said Goh.
While expressing his concern on the potential detrimental consequences of Pelosi’s controversial visit to Taiwan, especially on the escalation of tension between China and Taiwan, and trade and geopolitics of the region, he underscored that all quarters involved must exercise great self-restraint, and to address the dicey situation amicably through negotiations.
“The international community should strive to pursue a more peaceful, harmonious, compassionate and progressive New World Order, and not one that is arrogant, provocative, violent, and warmongering,” Goh said.
