SERDANG: Sabah’s local products and tourism destinations are being promoted at the Malaysia Agriculture Horticulture and Agro Tourism (Maha) 2022 held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) here until next Sunday (Aug 14).
Minister of Agriculture and Food Industries, Datuk Seri Dr. Ronald Kiandee on Friday paid a visit to the Sabah ‘Pavilion’ which is one out of the 13 showcasing produce accompanied by designs unique to each state’s respective cultural heritage.
Maha is a programme that features various new products related to agriculture based on the latest technology, local and foreign innovations, effective marketing and production strategies and other approaches that can help the sector grow.
The last Maha event held in late 2018 had successfully attracted 3.3 million visitors and recorded sales of RM215 million.
This year’s theme, “Food Security for the Future” coincides with the current focus on strengthening the national food security agenda after the country’s resilience had been tested by the pandemic and natural disasters such as floods.
History has taught us that in a time of peace or crisis, countries can be brought to their knees and stripped of their sovereignty when becoming dependent upon another.
Recognising the importance of Food Security, the Cabinet Committee on National Food Security Policy chaired by the Prime Minister was established on March 2020 to formulate a holistic and sustainable food security policy to ensure the stability of the country’s food supply.
The committee is responsible for examining issues related to food security comprehensively covering aspects of the supply chain, workforce, technology application, financial resources, investment, land use and infrastructure.
Representing Sabah are agencies and departments under the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) as well as entrepreneurs under the state Ministry of Industrial Development.
