RANAU: People here are urged to always preserve in their minds the efforts and sacrifices of past leaders who gave everything they have in order to achieve independence of the state and nation.

Residents in this district must also fly the Jalur Gemilang as well as the Sabah State Flag in their surroundings in order to show the spirit of patriotism and nationalism to the country.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Abidin Madingkir said in conjunction with the National Month Celebration with the theme ‘Malaysian Family Strong Together’, the people should be grateful for the progress the country has experienced so far.

“We are actually grateful because as Malaysians this independence allows us to live in a harmonious, peaceful and prosperous atmosphere.

“Independence is very important to us and we should be grateful to the previous leaders, who fought to claim independence from the British government,” he said.

Thus, Abidin who is also the Paginatan Assemblyman hopes young generation to be grateful that independence is important not only to the current generation but also to the future.

He said this while officiating the Ranau District Level 2022 Malaysia Family Freedom Journey Programme held at the Ranau District Office compound, recently.

Meanwhile, the head of the Kembara Merdeka troupe, Mohd Rizal Mohd Yunus who is also the National Film Director (FINAS) of Borneo said this programme is an annual programme organised by the Department of Information (JaPen) in Sabah.

However, he said during the pandemic the organising of the event could not be implemented so that is why this year’s programme was very special.

The launch of the Merdeka Campaign was completed by TYT Sabah, Yang di-Pertua Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Juhar Mahiruddin at the Kota Kinabalu Town Field on July 31.

This programme will cross six zones, involving 43 checkpoints in 25 districts throughout the state from August 9 to 19 with the aim of further promoting the celebration of National Month and the flying of the Jalur Gemilang flag.

This trip involves a distance of 2,150 kilometers and is accompanied by 17 vehicles and 50 participants consisting staff from Bernama, RTM, FINAS, Pos Malaysia, MCMC, PDRM, SESB, APM, Sabah State Health Department, Telekom Malaysia and JaPen.

“So far, the group has travelled as far as 1,423 kilometers and today, the group will travel as far as 272 kilometers covering Ranau and Pitas districts,” he said.

Also present at the ceremony were the District Officer, Jumain Abd Gani, Chief Assistant Director of the Nerve Movement and Issue Management Division of JaPen Sabah, Busmin Brahim, heads of departments, local community leaders and others.
