Kota Kinabalu: Two men were fined a total of RM50,000 for hiring illegal immigrants.
Teo Meng Piew, 44, and Wilson Sim Chong Hou, 31, pleaded guilty separately before Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz, to the charges against them on Monday.
Teo was fined RM10,000 in default two months’ jail for each illegal immigrants he hired in which three illegal immigrants were involved.
He needed to pay a total of RM30,000.
Teo was found employing two Filipinos and an Indonesian, who did not have any document at 2.35pm on March 7 this year at the TM Foods Sdn Bhd in Jalan KKIP Selatan Industri Zone 1 off Jalan Sepanggar Bay, near here.
The offence under Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/63 which carries a jail term of up to a year, or a fine of between RM10,000 and RM50,000, or both, for each illegal immigrant involved.
Meanwhile, Sim was ordered to pay RM10,000 or spend two months in prison for each illegal immigrant involved in which there were two and this means Sim needs to pay a total of RM20,000.
He had employed an Indonesian and Filipina at 9.07pm on July 20 this year at the Miracle Reflexology (Wholly owned by Miliksama Sdn Bhd) in Towering Koidupan Perdana, Penampang.
The court granted Sim’s application to pay the fine by instalment in which the first payment of RM5,000 must be paid by Monday, second payment of RM5,000 on or before Oct 3 this year and the last payment of RM10,000 on or before Nov 30 this year.
During mitigation, both Teo and Sim asked for leniency.
Hoever, Prosecuting Officer Chin Tze Mee from the Immigration Department who appeared for the prosecution, urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence.
