LABUAN: Thousands of job seekers, students and school leavers thronged the Labuan Youth Career Programme 2022 in conjunction with the National Youth Day celebration held at the Financial Park Complex last Sunday.
The crowd, including university graduates, formed long lines outside and inside the event halls, all hunting for the career opportunities on offer at the event, organised by the Labuan Youth and Sports Department (JBS). There were 22 booths at the career fair and some were able to secure a walk-in interview for 83 vacancies in the various sectors, including the oil and gas-related sector.
JBS economic development division head, Rody Erik Anajery, said the job carnival received overwhelming response not only from here but also from outside, including the island of Menumbok and Kuala Penyu, Sabah.
“Nearly 3,000 job seekers came to the complex for the limited number of vacancies, and I couldn’t be happier…we hope we will be able to organise the second leg of the event next year,” he said.
The companies which took part in the career programme included Labuan Integrated Insurance, Qualitas Medical Group Sdn Bhd, Thai Odyssey Management Services Sdn Bhd, Thai Odyssey Group Sdn Bhd, Thai Odyssey Sdn Bhd, Healthcare Planet Sdn Bhd, Sunrise ITC, Persatuan Autism Labuan and Crowe (Labuan) LLP, Brighton.
The other companies were Pemborong Maju Bersatu Sdn Bhd, Asian Supply Base Sdn Bhd (ASB), Labuan Shipyard Engineering Sdn Bhd, Reservoir Link Sdn Bhd, Schlumberger (WTA) Sdn Bhd, Petra Resources Sdn Bhd, Sabah Flour and Feed Mills Sdn Bhd, Jaya Abadi Employment Agency, Icon Trans Sdn Bhd, Kelab Pengurusan Golf Perbadanan Labuan, Gain Forlife Sdn Bhd, Skill Development Sdn Bhd and Lazenda Hotel.
Salim Rahman, 22, who graduated from a private university in the peninsula in January this year, joined one of the queues at the complex in trying to secure a job.
He said when he was an undergraduate, he thought a degree would mean an easy search for a job.
“But I’ve realised that things change. So, I have to keep on trying and I must build up my communication skills to have a better chance of getting employed,” he added.
