Kota Kinabalu: State Customs have foiled attempts to smugggle in contraband alcohol and cigarettes worth RM8.88 million plus duties.

Sabah Royal Malaysian Customs (RMC) Deputy Director Cheong Yu Min (pictured, second from left) said their scanners at Sepanggar Ports sniffed out the first out of three containers on 10 Sept (Saturday).

“It was packed with 10.2 million sticks of cigarettes. Eight days later on 18 Sept (Sunday), the second and third containers were found to be keeping 52,272 litres of various alcohol.

“The modus operandi used by both operations was declaring imported goods as other items in a bid to fool authorities,” he told a press conference at Sabah Ports on Thursday.
