KENINGAU: Hidayu Bedesly, who is an early childhood education teacher at Keningau Vocational College, has been nominated as one of the five finalists of the Bett Asia award in the gamechanger category for her contribution as a content creator.

Bett Asia is Asia’s leading technology education convention organised annually in the Asian region and it will take place face-to-face on October 11-12 this year in Bangkok, Thailand.

“The announcement of the list of finalists was announced on September 22,” said the college Head of Research and Innovation, Dr Sirhajwan Idek here.

He said Hidayu is a YouTuber who actively produces tutorial videos related to early childhood education that were originally only accessed by the students of the college before they were also used as a source of learning material by teachers from other colleges who teach subjects related to the development of children.

Sirhajwan said she also regularly holds tuition classes directly through her YouTube channel which is attended by kindergarten students with the supervision of their teachers.

“She has guided many students in the college concerned to produce videos related to the course they are studying as a learning technique. In fact, she has conducted sharing sessions for local educators,” he said.

The director of the college, Johari @ Jaibet Sabin, described Hidayu’s nomination for the award as proof of how important it is for teachers to constantly adapt to changing times over time.

He thinks that teachers need to dare to try something new so that the quality of teaching and learning that takes place in school and outside of school continues to be improved.

Meanwhile, an integrated art project by a team of English language teachers from the College comprising and led by Dr. Sirhajwan Idek, Nurazilah Othman and Sydney Engelbert Ganggang has been selected as the finalist for the world’s most prestigious education award for UK-based English language teaching innovations, ELTons Innovation Awards in the local innovation category.

According to Sirhajwan the project known as “Dau Dau’ started in late 2020 with the goal to provide students platforms and assistance to explore their artistic talents via arts. This project was mentored and supported by Macmillan Education and International House World Organisation.

“This was the first time Malaysia became a finalist for this competitive award. The announcement of the finalists was made on 15 September and the project guides students to develop their own artistic works by giving them multiple options which include performing arts, literary arts, visual arts or the combination of these where they can express their thoughts and reflect on their personal and cultural stories.

“To date, over 130 students from the college successfully produced performance videos such as poetry, storytelling, readers’ theatre, pantomime, radio play, monologue and animation that have been submitted as entries for online art festivals and virtual talent shows,” he said.

According to him, these students have earned prizes and made national headlines from these competitions. Other than performances, some of the students at the college were able to get their written work like poems, short stories, essays as well as visual artwork published in British magazines.

Sirhajwan said the project offers alternatives to special needs learners via sign language and animated performances. The primary theme of this project is folklore followed by a secondary theme which is contemporary issues.

There are five other finalists in the local innovation categories from Brazil, Peru, Greece, Ukraine and United Kingdom.

Meanwhile the college director, Johari @ Jaibet Sabin, commended the effort made by these teachers that enriches students’ English language learning experience while giving them the opportunities to showcase their talents and creativity.

According to him, the project also helps to preserve cultural heritage due to its focus on traditional and legendary lore. The winners for these awards will be announced at a physical ceremony in London on 30 November 2022. The event will be accessible on virtual platform too.
