Kota Kinabalu: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a man to 10 months’ jail for stealing iron drain covers.
Mohd Aqiel Ahmadi pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to stealing two drain covers at 5.56pm on Aug 28 in front of the CH Canopy Trading, Country Height in Penampang.
The court heard that Aqiel was seen on CCTV recordings lifting the two drain covers and putting them into a van.
Aqiel was arrested by police on Aug 29 for committing the offence, said the prosecution.
He was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, on conviction.
In another case, a 35-year-old man was jailed for disposing of seven stolen iron rods.
Adhlisyam Sahar admitted to committing the offence by selling the iron rods at Kg Rongolis, Tuaran last month.
The items were stolen from the roadside of Jalan Bantayan, Minintod on Sept 24.
Adhlisyam was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, on conviction.
Meanwhile, two women, who pleaded guilty to committing affray, were ordered to undergo three months of Compulsory Attendance Order (CAO).
Nurhanisya Abdul Razak, 24, and Nurhafifah Aliya, 19, pleaded guilty to fighting outside Lobby A of the Loft, Imago, at 8.30pm on April 4, this year.
The magistrate ordered both Nurhanisya and Nurhafifah to perform the order for community service for four hours a day in default four months’ jail.
Earlier, the court heard from the prosecution that the incident occurred as a result of a verbal argument when solving a debt problem between Nurhafifah’s younger sibling and Nurhanisya.
The offence under Section 160 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of up to six months, or with a maximum fine of RM1,000 or with both, on conviction.
In another case, a 54-year-old businessman was charged with threatening a woman.
Tsen Kwet Leong pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to criminally intimidating Amui @ Amoy Ulum at 12.30pm on Sept 2 in a house at Taman Friendship, Petagas.
The prosecution proposed bail at RM4,000 while counsel Keith Goh representing Tsen applied for a lower bail on the grounds that Tsen has no fixed income and taking care of his sick parent.
Tsen was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code and carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both, on conviction.
