Kota Kinabalu: Shotokan Karate Association of Sabah (SKAS) captured one gold, two silver and four bronze medals at the Milo Super Karate Kids Championship 2022 organised by AAK (Association for the Advancement of Karatedo) in Quezon City, Philippines last weekend.
Fifteen-year-old black belter Andryan Sze Hoong Chong won the only gold for the team in kumite and also a bronze in individual kata.
The other medal winners were Izz Daniel Jauw, 16, and Fanz Xavier Fancey Sami, 13, who delivered the two silvers in kumite, while the bronze came in the kata events from Ethan Yee Victor, 12, Isen Chong Kai Yuan, 13, and Yong Kai Le, 14.
SKAS president and head coach Simon Chia said it was a fruitful outing for the six-member team who were making their debut in the international stage and was delighted to see them all winning medals.
“This is the second international tournament participated by SKAS in 2022. It was a fruitful outing in spite of some flight issues due to the typhoon in the Philippines. The competition has provided our young athletes opportunities to get valuable exposure and we are very proud of their commendable effort and sportsmanship. The hard work put in by them in training has certainly produced very good results,” he said.
Meanwhile, he also announced that the 3rd SKAS Karate Open Championship 2022 will be held at the Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP) on December 10-11.
